He had six children and had to raise a younger brother as well. The early death of his parents and the renunciation of worldly life by his elder brother thrust upon Tukaram the role of the head of his extended Hindu family at a fairly young age.Tukaram was married a second time as his first wife was chronically ill. Being traders by profession, they learned to read and write as to maintain accounts of financial transactions. Though, technically regarded as Shudras by Brahmins, they were by no means socially or culturally backward. Several generations of Tukaram's ancestors had farmed this land and sold its produce as merchant-farmers. Tukaram's family owned a comparatively large piece of prime agricultural land on the bank of the river Indrayani in Dehu. Bolhoba had inherited the office of the village Mahajan from his forefathers. Tukaram was the second son of his parents, Bolhoba Ambile ( or More) and Kankai. Tukaram’s first marriage took place when he was only fifteen years old. At a relatively young age, owing to the death of his parents, Tukaram took charge of the family, and before he was twenty-one years old Tukaram had fathered six children. Tukaram father had inherited the position of Mahajan, or collector of revenue from traders, from his father. Their family deity was Vithoba or Panduranga. His parents were poor farmers and were known to be charitable. Sant Tukaram, or Tuka, was born in 1598 in Dehu, a village near Pune, on the banks of the Indrayani River. Poetry as a genre is incomplete without Tukaram. There is no other Marathi writer who has so deeply and widely influenced Marathi literary culture since. He could be called the quintessential Marathi poet reflecting the genius or the language as well as its characteristic literary culture. Tukaram's stature in Marathi literature is comparable to that of Shakespeare in English or Goethe in German. Tukaram's genius partly lies in his ability to transform the external world into its spiritual analogue. Tukaram is arguably one of the greatest poets in Marathi language.
